Pondering

No matter how far our fate brings us, no matter how excited we feel when we reach the places we only dream of seeing, there is no greater feeling than being home.
Fort Bonifacio
Driving around Fort Bonifacio often brings me nostalgia.  The old military camp has changed so much in the past years.  In fact, there is almost no more trace of everything that I grew up with. The quiet surroundings full of trees where we stroll along as kids have been changed with tall buildings.  The spacious golf course covered with a carpet of bermuda grass withered with bountiful water every morning is now covered with asphalt.  The privacy we once enjoyed having the access to the camp has now been replaced with buses and jeepneys plying the road, bringing people from all over the metro.   The only evidence left of what it was before is the small portion in the finance area.  A few years back when fort bonifacio was initially offered for sale, the developer marketed it as “the way life should be” but for someone who was born here and who have spent the many childish laughters, there will be no more to look back to but the memories it had left behind inside me.

The Market Place.

Coming home for me means living my life the way it was before.   Though a lot of things have definitely changed, I still act as if It was just yesterday when I was here.  None of the usual Balikbayan scene.

Among my siblings, its only me who likes to accompany mama to the wet market.  Mom doesn’t go anymore to Pasig Market but this time, on a Saturday morning I asked her to go there.  Philippine wet market is always annoyingly noisy and literally wet, overly crowded to the point that I almost fell down when somebody just blindly passed by me.  Mom jumped from one stall to another looking for fresh meat, and fresh means ‘mainit-init pa as in bagong katay’.  Wow! Everything is fresh from fish, meat, fruits, vegetables…another face of the Philippine wet market are the vendors of all ages.  I pity the small children who, instead of playing at home are there, roaming all over the market selling plastic bags.  At the same time, I was so proud that at such a young age they learn the value of hard work.

A New Year’s Resolution

Whew!  Its January once more, time for a fresh start.  Time to count from 1 to 300 plus days before Christmas,  time for a New Year’s Resolution.

Let me think of the things I ought to do and not to do starting this year and hopefully permanently. (not necessarily in order.)

1.  No more coffee or at least lessen it.

2.  Abstain from too much Shopping.

3.  Don’t forget to drink vitamins everyday.

4.  Have time to hear the Mass at least on day off if sunday is not possible.

5.  Save, save and save more.

Happy New Year!

They call it Autumn-Winter

20thof November 2008. One day before my trip to Europe..I woke up with a heavy fever…I refused to believe it was happening to me.  Not this time when its only one day before my MUCH AWAITED trip to Europe! I can’t be sick.  I prepared myself as needed for work at 2pm, but this time I took taxi to work as I felt that my body was so weak. I ignored whatever I was feeling.  At work, I started chilling.  I bought 17dhs fresh orange juice which I don’t usually do on ‘normal’ circumstances as I am so tight when it comes to money spent while on duty, but this time I had to, to prevent my condition from getting worse.  I went to pharmacy and bought 36 dhs medicine for fever.  I told the pharmacist I cannot get sick!  At 10pm, right after my duty, I was already so weak.  I slept right away.  I had to rest.  By 2am, I got up feeling worst! This time I had given up my travel plans…I was too weak to go.  I took 2 capsules again and went back to bed….I woke up at 5am and changed.

EURO TOUR FIRST STOP:

MUNICH, GERMANY

“On a Budget”

By hook or by crook,  I reached Munich, Germany at 45 past 12noon with my friends Maricel and Arlene. Arlene and I planed this trip up to early morning during and after our work, almost everyday, searching the net for the best deals.  I can’t let this chance pass by just like that!

Only a few minutes after our arrival, as we wander through the train station, we started feeling cold.  One old lady even reacted upon seeing my ”shoes” seemingly amazed, then i realized that everybody was wearing boots or at least closed rubber shoes.  Their clothes weren’t also same as ours.  We looked for a corner and opened our luggageand took out “additional clothing”, and this is not only for the purpose of blending with them but because we felt it was necessary as it was freezing cold!

From Munich International Airport we took the train at 8.50 euro each.  The Wallis Hotel was just a walking distance away from the train station.  Check in process was very quick.  We were given a room on the first floor, it was a cute green room for 3 persons and a bathroom with a bathtub.  Not bad for 113 euro a night. Immediately  after dropping our luggage in our hotel room, we moved and explored marienplatz and the old town residence,  although just a walking distance away we didn’t manage to walk back to the hotel as it was freezing cold!  We decided to take a taxi at 6.30 euro, split into 3. It was always a relief whenever we are inside a room or any closed space as there are heaters installed there . After gaining back enough”courage” to face the cold weather outside, we again went out to eat dinner in a Chinese restaurant just across our hotel.  We ordered 2 platters of fried rice, a bowl of hot soup each, and stir-fried beef, which we didn’t finish as it was too much for the 3 of us.  We paid 38 euro split into 3.  Before our first order was served, our excitement heightened by the sight of snow fall!  Yes, coming from a tropical country Philippines, and an alien residence of sunny Dubai, it was our first time to see snow falling from “heaven”.

EURO TOUR SECOND STOP:

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

“…Of Apple trees and Snowflakes”

Surprisingly,  we didn’t pass through passport control in Copenhagen International Airport.  Before we knew it, we were already in Denmark!  Maricel’sfather and uncle, both based in Copenhagen fetched us from the airport.  In only 5 minutes or so of drive, we reached her uncle’s home and our “home for two nights”

Since we have a host family in Denmark, we felt very relaxed.  There, we didn’t have to carry a map, asked for directions nor plan where to go.  We experienced “serviced de luxe”!  Thanks to the Matunog Clan.

The front yard of the house was covered with snow.  There were apple trees too!  Since autumn had all the leaves gone, winter didn’t keep us from seeing green apples hanging on the apple tree.  Though the house was typical Danish outside, inside of it didn’t hide the Filipino look.

Ever heard of Christmas Market in Europe?  Though it was -3 degrees, we headed towards the Tivoli Garden and experience our winter wonderland Christmas!

Entrance to the Tivoli Garden was 12crooner each, rides are paid separately.  Only Maricel and cousin Mikey tried the rides though, as we thought it was too cold to manage.

EURO TOUR NEXT STOP:

PARIS, FRANCE

 “Amazing Race?”

Nah, this is not my version of Lovers in Paris, but it will come soon, tsk..tsk..tsk.

Ours was actually like an Amazing Race.  We were in Paris only for 2 days.  We got to Paris via Air France.  We flew at 10am and arrived  after almost 2 hours. We checked in at Perfect Hostel, in a private triple room at 75euro a night after a train ride where we saw Paris “not at its best”.  Vandalism was everywhere.  I don’t know if it was part of their expression being known to be artistic or just plain rage.  Whatever it is, i don’t find it nice.  Unlike our first two stops, Paris was more diverse.  Much like London (the first European city I’ve visited).  But like in Germany, to speak to them was a challenge! Not much speaks English.  They speak only French.  Anyway, we managed….

Of course, a visit to Paris is never complete without seeing the Eiffel Tower.  After having dinner in one of the Restos in front of the Louvre Museum, where we ate pasta at 6.50 euro each plus a slice of pizza, we passed by to a souvenir shop then headed to the Eiffel Tower by train at 1.50euro each.  But due to slight rain and windy night,  we decided to leave…

So the next day, we came back to see the Eiffel Tower then rushed back to the hotel to check out and left our luggage in the train station for 9euro and proceeded to Disneyland Park Paris!

My second visit to Disneyland Resort still left me disappointed, for again I didn’t get to fulfill my dream of getting a souvenir photowith Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck!

“They call it Autumn-Winter”

Strolling along the streets full of yellow orange leaves scattered on the ground, a very cool breeze kisses the skin, or pearly white snow showers the ground, yes this is what they call autumn winter.  Now, after soooo long, on an autumn winter day, Ive been there….

Hongkong! Hongkong!

This is Hong Kong Disneyland!

I had never been to any Disneyland Resort as a child.  I had a bad experience riding a Ferris wheel when I was 11, since then I developed some sort of trauma with heights and objects of this sort.  When I first rode an airplane at 12 years old, our 45-minute-flight to Bicol seemed so long for me already. At 18, i read somehere that i had to face my fear in order to overcome it.  So despite being so scared, i tried the roller coaster ride at Dreamescape in Robinson’s Galleria! Yes, it was a roller coaster for kids! But even it, was a big challenge for me! Then at 21, i faced the Anchors Away at Enchanted KIngdom.  I chose to sit in the middle part so as not to feel the heights. As it starts to move faster, one of our companions started crying and wanted to jump off, so we were laughing and teasing her all the more. But believe me, all throughout the ride i was dying of nervousness.  I was pretending im okay but I couldn’t even open my eyes! But i was so proud of myself after that. At least I survived the ride.  Years later, on 25th of September 2008, the test came….

HONG KONG TOUR WITH MY SISTER EDEN

Day 1: Thanks Liway!

We met my sister Eden’s former classmate in College at Mc Donalds in Tsim Sha Tsui, and she brought us to Peking Garden Restaurant where she made a reservation for lunch. It was a fine dining resto that offers authenic chinese cuisine. Then, at 4pm, she drove and came with us to Disneyland Resort. Lucky that there was a promotion on that day for annual pass holders that they can bring 1 friend free for the whole day pass at the Resort so my sister and I enjoyed the resort for free courtesy of Liway. Thanks girl!

True to what I have heard from friends who had been to Hong Kong Disneyland, it is more for kids under 12.  There were not much rides for adults and it was quite small too.  Despite the many negative reviews about this resort, I’d say that i still enjoyed seeing Disneyland, the stay at Hollywood Hotel was part of the fun. Everywhere was Mickey Mouse! From cups, bed sheets, elevators, building and even the train that stops at Disney is especially designed with Mickey Mouse feel!

DAY 2:  Storm signal no. 8!

The day we left Hollywood Hotel in Disneyland, there was an advisory that says, its signal no. 3 that day but there was no rain yet so we took pictures here and there.  By the time we reached Kowloon, the rain started pouring heavily.  We crossed the street and luckily, the City View Hotel where I had a reservation for two nights was just across. We explored nathan road that afternoon in search for dinner.  Although there were too many food stalls nearby, we ended up buying food at seven 11 and ate dinner in the room because the menu in the small restaurants  were all written in chinese and we hardly find someone that speaks english, too.  Storm signal no. 8 was advised, by 6pm, public transport were shut down, malls have closed.  We were locked inside our hotel room with nothing to do, so i decided to get an internet connection for hkd100 and ordered room service.

Day 3: Victoria Peak

We called the Tourist Hot line and asked if it was safe to go out.

It was a breathtaking view of Hong Kong seen from Victoria Peak.  I will let the picture speak for itself.

Day 4:  The Test.

All the scary rides I could think of was in front of me.  Since there was only my sister and I together at the Ocean Park, I had no choice but to accompany her and try whatever there is to try.  Knowing her, I knew I’m up for the test of my life! The challenge:  The Mine Train.  This time, closing my eyes didn’t do the trick! It was more scary when eyes are closed.  There was butterfly in my stomach. It drops and turns rapidly. But before I could start praying, we were already at the end point.  Alas! it wasn’t so scary at all! It lasted only 2  minutes or so. ( that was the only ride i tried though…hehehe.  all the other rides, my sister experienced alone. Brave birthday girl! )

No, I didn't have the guts to try it! That's my sister

The Cable Car. We moved from the Highlands to the Lowlands which was on the other side of the mountain.  We took the Cable car to transfer. Ughhh, I swear I would never ride a cable car again! Yes, i have overcome the roller coaster but comes another frightening exprience.  It was 15 to 20 minutes of hair raising, horrifying, death defying, worst thing to experience for me! Below us was the ocean, just one wrong move and I’d be dead! As they say, the cable car is one of the tourist attractions in Ocean Park, so I would not get into details as each one of us has our own fears. Mine just happened to be this.

My Travel Wish List

CommunityMapImage?id=22373894&type=TRIPADVISOR&size=LARGE

2008.  The year is almost over.  I am glad that I’ve had a fantastic summer in LOndon last june, followed immediately by an equally short yet worthy family reunion in Manila last July.  August was time to recharge the wallet…but a month of staying put was such a long wait.  Another vacation in Manila in September was just so fun to resist! And since i didn’t go anywhere in August I have to double the act in September with a trip to Hongkong.

I am dreaming of an Autumn in Japan and Seoul…or a stroll in Paris before it gets freezy..perhaps a winter in amsterdam, italy or switzerland is just as exciting! I love Old Places that is why Europe is a place I will never get tired of.

Africa.  I imagine myself lazing around in Seychelles. Far East. Bargain shopping in Bangkok and thai massage in Phuket. Philippines’ Palawan…so near and yet still remains a dream destination.

I do not know why, but…my imagination always shy away when it comes to America. It is not one place I dare to dream..or at least not now.

bAKASYON gRande! HOME AT LAST!

Cimg0370__21 Dubai International Airport: Reminiscing.

Its been two years since i last set foot inside Dubai international airport.  Sitted eagerly inside the waiting lounge, i took out my notebook and started to write, then I remember it was also like this when I first left manila going to Dubai two years ago. I was writing my thoughts while anticipating of what will happen in the next two years which made me think today of what had happened in the last two years…ummm?

Singapore Changi Airport, Terminal 2: wow!

My flight landed at Singapore Changi Airport exactly at 7:15 am.

Since I have plenty of time to kill, i strolled along this amazingly equipped airport and feast my eyes with things to see and do. I will be here in the next 4 days as a prelude to my long awaited vacation to manila.

Uniquely Singapore!

“Koon”

Coming from a sunny Dubai, it was quite a sight to see rain pouring down as we have gone out of the airport.  At 11 am, we kicked off with an enjoyable taxi ride to the hotel care of “koon”, the Singaporean part-time taxi driver cum businessman (as he described himself) who could very well pass as a tourist guide for Singapore and made us feel at home with his rich Tagalog vocabulary, the reason? he has a Filipino wife!  He said that living in Singapore is so costly and with two children to send to school, a part-time job is inevitable.

Orchard Road

Soon as we got to the hotel, after a quick shower and change we didn’t waste anymore time and gone out to our first stop…a dinner at the Orchard Road and Shopping!Since Christmas was already approaching, Orchard rd was beautifully dressed up and that was also the first night of thier Christmas light up festival.  It was truly a sight to behold!  Everywhere, lights were on and people were all around too!  I noticed too that just like Dubai, Singapore has a multi-cultural community too.  What I liked about Orchard the most is that, you can doll up yourself without anyone giving you an annoying look.

Day 2:

A Cross-Cultural Wedding.

wedding reception at the Holiday Inn Singapore

wedding reception at the Holiday Inn Singapore

Alarm rang at 7:00 am.  Although we slept late last night, we had to get up early to attend to a wedding of my friend’s colleague.  On our way to the holy Trinity Church, we were greeted by the morning sunshine and rich greenery of Singapore roads.  I was so delighted to witness trees enveloped before our pathways! Truly,Singapore lives up to be a garden city.

Wedding rites begun at 9:30.  It was just like a typical wedding ceremony that I have attended to in the past, except that the bride and the groom were from two different backgrounds.  It was union of a Malaysian girl and a south-African guy.  A love story that blossomed and developed in Dubai, after all, not all love stories of this genre ends in a bitter goodbye. They came from entirely different continents, met in desert sands of the middle east, married in Singapore and who knows where their future will bring them.

Day 3:

Sentosa Park

Cable ride at Sentosa

Cable ride at Sentosa

I managed to take pictures despite my shaking nerves as we rode the sky-ride tens of meters above the ground at sentosa park.  This was one of the many attractions inside the park.  Although I had a list of things to see inside, I didn’t have much luck to see it all.  I have missed the underwater park, the cable ride and animal safari which would be enough reason to comeback.

The Merlion

If only my legs could shout, I know it will ask me to stop.  But even then, I still won’t obey for I would never leave this island without my picture taken next to the Merlion!  With my friend already complaining,  I did not give up searching for the merlion park, while searching for it with a map on my hand, I have seen some more places of interest like the Fullerton hotel with its huge and beautifully architectured facade, you’ll never be able miss it.  Then across was the esplanade theater, also another picture perfect building.  And alas! the Merlion Park!

Manila: Home at last!

9:00 pm, Ninoy Aquino International Airport Manila.

Who cares about all of these, when all that matters is that “I’m Home At last!

by the balcony…

Standing by our balcony one night while watching down people passing by, my friends and i wonder if true love exists in a place like dubai, where people are 80% expatriates coming from different sides of the world.

…where relationships start and end in a snap.

…where people come and go in one sudden stroke of fate.

…where you can possibly do all things and yet still hold no definite future.

In a place like this, could true love exists?

Or could it be that, just like jobs, its on a per contract basis, when the contract expires and so does love? just wondering….

Why people fall in love

It is a mystery why we fall in love. It is a mystery how it
happens. It is a mystery when it comes. It is a mystery why
some love grows and it is a mystery why some love fails.

You can analyze this mystery and look for reasons and
causes, but you will never do anymore that take the life out
of the experience. Just as life itself is more than the sum of
the bones and muscles and electrical impulses in the body,
love is more than the sum of the interests and attractions
and commonalities that two people share. And just as life
itself is a gift that comes and goes in its own time, so too, the
coming of love must be taken as an unfathomable gift that
cannot be questioned in its ways.

Sometimes, hopefully at least once in your life - the gift of
love will come to you in full flower. Take hold of it and
celebrate it in all inexpressible beauty. This is the dream we
all share. More often, it will come and take hold of you,
celebrate you for a brief moment, then move on.

When this happen to young people, they too often try to
grasp the love and hold it to them, refusing to see that it is a
gift that just as freely, moves away. When they fall out of
love, or the person they love feels the spirit of love leaving,
they try desperately to reclaim the love that is lost rather
than accepting the gift for what it was, then moving on.

They want answers where there are no answers. They
want to know what is wrong in them that makes the other
person no longer love them, or try to get their love to change,
thinking that if some small things were different, love would
bloom again. They blame their circumstances and say that if
they go far away and start a new life, their love will grow.

They try anything to give meaning to what has happened. But
there is no meaning beyond the love itself, and until they
accept its own mysterious ways, they live in a sea of misery.

You need to know this about love, and accept it. You need to
treat what it brings you with kindness. If you find yourself in
love with someone who does not love you, be gentle with
yourself. There is nothing wrong with you. Love just didn’t
choose to rest in the other person’s heart.

If you find yourself someone in love with you but you don’t
love him back, feel honored that love came and called at your
door, but gently refuse the gift you cannot return. Do not
take advantage; do not cause pain. How you deal with love
is how you deal with yourself. All our hearts feel the same
pains and joys, even if our lives and ways are different.

If you fall in love with another, and he falls in love with you,
and then love chooses to leave, do not try to reclaim it nor to
assess blame. Let it go. There is a reason and there is a
meaning. You will know in time.

Remember that you don’t choose love. Love chooses you. All
you can really do is accept it for all its mystery when it
comes into your life. Feel the way it fills you to overflowing,
then reach out and give it away. Give it back to the person
who brought it alive in you. Give it to others who deem it
poor in spirit. Give it to the world around you in any way you can.

There is where many lovers go wrong. Having been so long
without love, they understand love only as a need. They see
their hearts as empty places that will be filled by love, and
they begin to look at love as something that flows to them
rather than from them.

The first blush of new love is filled to overflowing, but as
their love cools, they revert to seeing their love as a need.
They cease to be someone who generates love and instead
become someone who seeks love. They forget that the
secret of love is that it is a gift, and that it can be made to
grow only by giving it away.

Remember this and keep it to your heart. Love has its time, its
own season, its own reason for coming and going. You
cannot bribe it or coerce it, or reason it into staying. You can
only embrace it when it arrives and give it away when it
comes to you. But if it chooses to leave from your heart or
from the heart of your lover, there is nothing you can do and
there is nothing you should do. Love always has been and
always will be a mystery. BE GLAD THAT IT CAME TO LIVE
FOR A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE.
